BOOMZILLA
Waterfront Stage ~ Sunday at 11:00am
Boomzzilla is a high-energy Electroclash/Live PA act from Seattle. Their singer sounds like a mix of Thom Yorke and Billy Joe Armstrong. That’s the easy way to say it. A more complex way would involve describing the synth textures and solid, rockin’ guitar and drum parts that add up to dynamic, catchy rock and dance hooks. It would also involve talking about the odd Sci-Fi and Horror/Fantasy concepts explored in the songs.
The music is simple Rock meets DJ energy, with a bit of HipHop. The influences are as wide as AC/DC, Devo, Daft Punk, Ween, Pink Floyd, the Police, Gorillaz, Led Zepplin, Franz Ferdinand… but Boomzzilla is always striving to realize these sounds in a new way.
Boomzzilla is only a year-and-a-half old with tons of shows under their belt and have a full album released (fully self-recorded and produced) on iTunes and in physical copy.
The members are Adam Kutchman, Mike Tipton, and Walker White.
This band is comprised of two college trained audio engineers and a singer with a great set of Rock n’ Roll pipes. Adam and Mike met attending a digital audio program together, and realized they already had two-thirds of a band when they started making music together. Then they left school for the prestigious and sought-after world of musical gear sales…and met Walker doodling at the door and checking receipts. Boomzzilla was born.
Charlotte Thistle Band
Redhook Stage ~ Saturday at 12:30pm
Charlotte Thistle, a native of Canada, has been performing around the Northwest for 10 years to critical acclaim. Her solo CD, A Girl With A Guitar, sold 500 copies and is almost out of print. Her new CD, with a full band, promises to be an even bigger success. Three ’sneak preview’ tracks are available for listening now.
Charlotte has performed at many festivals and well-known venues throughout the Northwest including the Oregon Country Fair, The Bumbershoot Arts Festival, the Northwest Folklife Festival, the Pike Market Buskers Festival, the Fremont Fair. She performs both solo and with her band, and is always delighted to perform for a listening audience in a coffeehouse, tavern or festival stage.
Instrumentation
Charlotte Thistle – guitar, vocals
Andy Short – bass
Jesse Janke – drums
Dub Lounge Intl
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 5:00pm
Dub Lounge International pays homage to the traditional forms of roots reggae, rocksteady, and dub as it was founded in it’s motherland. While many American reggae bands lean on pop and rock elements, D.L.I. continue fulfilling their cross-cultural listeners with their blend of organic roots.
Fronted by long-time Seattle reggae musician (and former ”Possitive Vibrations” DJ on KCMU), Naphtali Rashid, founded by former Wet City Rockers rhythm section, Dan Lloyd and Norman Baker, Dub Lounge International expanded their dub onslaught by enlisting Jonathan Kimball on guitar, and Darin “Diamond Dread” Pearson on keyboards. The band recently added drummer Larry Butler (Dub Narcotic Sound System, Covenant) and guitarist Puddu Dawes (Revolutionary Dream Band, Israel Vibration, Rankin’ Scroo, Pablo Moses) to the lineup.
The band members have been seen backing up reggae legends Prezident Brown, Wadi Gad, Winston Jarrett, Lutan Fyah, Norris Man, Ras Shilo, Clinton Fearon, and have shared the stage with Midnite, Rankin’ Scroo, Dezire, the Itals, Fishbone, Buju Banton, Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, Inner Circle, Groundation, Yami Bolo and Israel Vibration. Their latest album, “Dub Lounge One”, also includes guest vocalists Winston Jarrett and Ezra Tosh (cousin of Peter Tosh).
Eldridge Gravy & The Court Supreme
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 2:30pm
ELDRIDGE GRAVY & THE COURT SUPREME is a funk juggernaut. Backed by the hot, gritty orchestration of the 10-person Court Supreme, frontman Eldridge Gravy easily works dancefloors to a fever pitch with his full-bore performance and smooth rapport with the audience.
The band, like so many of its members, is the product of a wonderful accident. Early in 2006, in what was supposed to be a one-off event, an instrumental band teamed up with a guest singer to learn some James Brown and Parliament covers for a moving-out party. The next morning, the house was torn up, shattered glass everywhere, tables broken, and the landlord was on his way for the final walk-through. In the wake of this carnage, ELDRIDGE GRAVY & THE COURT SUPREME was born.
The group quickly picked up horns, keys, backup singers, and were soon 11 men and women strong. Originals soon replaced covers, sounding like a viscous blend of the songs they cut their teeth on — Sly and The Family Stone, Funkadelic, and James Brown are touchstones for their sound, but Eldridge Gravy has a distinct sound and persona that’s unmistakably their own. While Eldridge Gravy fit in with the recent soul revival heralded by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, they have also played alongside hip hop crews, balkan brass groups, and scuzzy bar rock bands. Their high energy, tight arrangements, and massive stage presence have the power to convince any crowd that funk ain’t dead.
Haiku-Chi
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 12:00pm
See this band live and they will capture you. the funkiest drummer in town, WOOGIE D from buffalo, NY will capture you. His rapping, drumming, and overall command of a crowd along with the strong, sexy singing of ANDREW NUNEZ (owner of the SeaMonster Lounge, songwriter), and MELISSA MONTALTO (who also plays electric violin and keys) they are sure to gain the respect of any crowd any place. Their first album HELLO KITTY, released in 09 in english and spanish is filled with great songs made even hotter live with the show stopping performances of JABRIL WILLIAMS on guitar and MARK MATTREY (buffalo, NY) on bass, laying down the thump all night like his hero Larry Graham. MATT ALSTON fills out the sound switching between a guitar, and keys, along with DAN MILAM on guitar, bass, and gadgetry. Electric energy, great musicians having fun, HAIKU-CHI is party soul.
Low-FI
Redhook Stage~ Sunday at 1:30pm
Low-Fi is a Power trio out of Boise, ID. Currently working on their 2nd self-released album. “They are an honest-to-goodness rock act a la Modest Mouse and Wilco.” (-Pacific Northwerst Inlander).
Madly in Dub
Waterfront Stage ~ Sunday at 12:15pm
Madly in Dub was founded in early 2008 by multi-Instrumentalist Todd Pruitt and classically trained Tabla player Michelle Tomyuk. During their first demo recording leap year weekend they encountered d’Artagnan ( MC Pressure) when he walked into the studio and began free-styling over the tracks. They were on their way to creating the band of their dreams! Producing a full sound live would require one more multi Instrumentalist, who shared the esthetic tastes and vision of the band , the advent of Savvy completed the band’s line up.
Featuring thick, layered beats, dub and funk bass, psychedelic keyboards and synths, masterful Tabla, vocal percussion and smart, intricate lyrical flow. Carefully crafted dance tunes make way for old school dub trances, as four musicians rotate through nearly a dozen instruments. Madly in Dub blends real live musicianship , technology and social awareness with an original and captivating sound.
Marmalade
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 6:15pm
It is time to change your conception of Seattle based music. For over a decade, a new style of music has been growing and evolving in the clubs of this famous West Coast city. Marmalade embodies this new music we call Groove.
Every Thursday night for over 8 years, Marmalade has brought live improvised danceable grooves to a club called Tost. Influenced by soul, funk, hip-hop, reggae, and jazz, the Marmalade vibe is the defining factor that sets this group apart in Seattle’s flourishing Groove scene. Positive, energetic, and free, the group encourages one to be oneself; that the only way to be cool is to be you.
More than a band, this collective of musicians is made up of members of Phat Sidy Smokehouse, nuSoltribe, StingShark, Super Sonic Soul Pimps, Jambalaya, TRWST, Diano Garcia, Diamond Hand, 17th Chapter, Blu Surkit, Karl Densen’s Tiny Universe, Dub Championz, Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown Band, and Reverse. Mesa & Ari
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 10:45am
Seattle’s newest rock powerhouse, Big High, is the brainchild of two veterans in the local music community. Originally formed as an acoustic duo in 2008, Mesa (Black Vinyl All-Stars) and Ari (AriSawkaDoria & Swampdweller) quickly decided they were destined for a much bigger sound. Mesa’s raw and powerful vocals command attention and are reminiscent of Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey. Whether shredding the guitar or laying the path to a beautiful melody, Ari Zucker once again makes things look easy and effortless… Big High is creating a rock revival for the ages…..come join the revolution!
– Seattle Show Gal — July 2009
Moe Provencher
Redhook Stage ~ Sunday at 12:15pm
Moe Provencher’s power-trio plays original americana/folk songs with sweet drums, killer harmonies, and hot pickin’.
Moe Provencher is, well, Moe Provencher. Her Band (or Project, or Adventure, or Hour, or whatnot) is most often Aimee Zoe Tubbs, Bob Rice, and Michele Khazak. A whole bunch of Seattle (and beyond) luminaries played on Blues Filter Through, and when we’re really really lucky, they show up on stage as well.
Moe Provencher is a singer, songwriter, engineer, and player of guitars, harmonicas, and mandolins. She has two solo records to date: 2007’s 4-song EP 2+2, and the full-length follow up in 2009, Blues Filter Through. Moe can also be found busking ’round the streets with Aimee as the country/bluegrass duo MoZo, and occasionally sitting in with other folks like The Starlings and Strange Jerome.
Aimee Zoe Tubbs is a drummer and singer who also dabbles in piano and saxophone. She can be found playing with Seattle americana group The Starlings, busking duo MoZo, and rock group My Favorite Girl as well as various other projects.
Bob Rice (Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker) – guitars - guitar player, singer and songwriter
Michele Khazak (Scandalmonger) – vocals – tra la la la la and so on and so forth
Alana King (Miss Mamie Lavona) – upright bass
Joanna Maria Hussain (Zili Misik) – electric bass – JM lives in Boston, so we only get to play with her a few times a year. It’s her phenomenal bass playing that appears on Blues Filter Through.
**The following folks all contributed to Blues Filter Through, and sometimes make guest appearances at shows:
Chris Zasche (The Maldives, Grand Hallway) played some pedal steel, Joy Mills and Tom Parker (The Starlings) sang and hollered, and Meg Allen and Alan Loomis
Olympic Sound Collective
Waterfront Stage ~Sunday at 2:45pm
Olympic Sound Collective brings jazz back to the dance floor with their original fusion of Soul, jazz and funk. The rhythm section grooves with the combination of funk bass from the B3 organ and keys, street beat drumming and old school guitar riffing. The dual horn section of trumpet and sax provide punches and hooks that build the music to fantastic peaks. Fans of Charlie Hunter, Galactic, MMW, and other jazz/funk artists will feel right at home when they hear the 1st few seconds of the sound that is, unmistakably, Olympic Sound Collective.
Olympus
Redhook Stage- Sunday at 5:15pm
Olympus is an alternative rock and roll band founded by 4 friends at the University of Washington in October 2007. Known for blending crunchy guitars, pretty melodies, experimental noise and dynamic drumming, they began playing shows immediately after their formation and spent their first year playing in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Bellingham, WA. In February 2008, the band released their debut single “Himalaya”, which was well received and began to earn the band a small fan base. In 2009, the band recorded its debut full length, “Big Echo” at Foundry Studios in Seattle, WA. The album was independently released on December 21, 2009, and is available at CDBaby.com, Itunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, and many other online stores.
After founding member and original bassist/guitarist Luke Untersteiner moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in the recording arts, the band has decided to continue as a three piece. Often experimenting with fuzz pedals and playing guitars through bass amps, the band continues to push the boundaries of their sound, and in the live setting, songs are often spontaneously extended. Olympus has been compared to bands such as Wilco, The Black Angels, Explosions in the Sky, Neil Young, and early U2.
Band Members:
John Velazquez – Guitar, Vocals
Kenji Ulmer – Vocals, Bass, Guitar
Kyle Pagel – Drums
Panda Conspiracy
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 3:45pm
Riff rock meets big band dub, the Panda Conspiracy’s original songs are energetic, danceable and straight from the heart. Band members utilize a wide array of instrumentation to get the message across in perfect harmony: “Take time to feel good, you really should, its easier than spitting wood”
The Phenomenauts
Redhook Stage ~ Saturday at 7:00pm
For The Phenomenauts, “Science And Honor” isn’t just a catchy slogan, but a way of life. “We like having a good time,” said Commander Angel Nova, “But it is especially great when we can trick someone into learning something.”
Conceived in the amazing year 2000, The Phenomenauts got early recognition as the East Bay’s “Craftiest and bravest band” (East Bay Express) for their now infamous commando-style performances in which they would set up in front of large music venues such as the legendary Fillmore and perform rollicking sets powered by car batteries for unsuspecting crowds. These early “missions” landed them on the cover of multiple bay area publications, including The San Francisco Weekly, The East Bay Express and Independent Musician Magazine.
This guerrilla strategy landed the band a slot on the 2003 Vans Warped Tour after showing up uninvited and performing for fans on the lawn (or any unattended stage they could find), which they kept up all summer long. The band won over Kevin Lyman, the tour’s founder, and was officially invited back the following year during which they continued to impress fans and critics nationwide from their very own “Space Station” stage. Among others, The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that out of 98 bands, “The Phenomenauts and Flogging Molly were among the best of the tour….playing a swinging amalgam of dusty garage rock and new wave.”
The group’s first full length recording, Rockets and Robots, was self-released in 2001 then re-issued on Springman Records (Big D And The Kids Table, Groovie Ghoulies, Jason Webley) in the Spring of 2003, and received “phenomenautly” by radio stations and audiences surrounding the bay area, charting on college stations KALX, KUSF, KSCU, KTUH (Hawaii), KZSU, along with KROQ affiliate Live 105 and Clear Channel’s “Channel 104.9″ in San Francisco.
The Phenomenauts second release on Springman Records was 2004’s Re-Entry, recorded at Oakland’s 880 Studios and produced by Chris Dugan, a member of Green Day side-project The Network. Through heavy touring and promotion, the album charted on the CMJ top 25 and garnered regular rotation on XM Satellite radio, while the music video for “Mission” appeared on the front-page of MySpace and YouTube (500,000+ combined views), and received play on MTV-U, Fuse, and various reels and video shows across the country.
The Phenomenauts are presently touring in support of their third full-length, For All Mankind, released in 2008 on Springman Records imprint Silver Sprocket. Inspired by new wave and 70’s punk, this album serves as a call to arms to defenders of science and honor across the galaxy, dealing with the serious implications of science fiction, science fact, and offering new perspectives on Earth life as we know it. The album comes in an innovative package invented by the band which folds out to make a space-ship and comes with a die-cast metal pin and 24 page full color booklet.
A critical part of the Phenomenaut experience has always been their live show, during which the band proudly displays their ever-evolving arsenal of homemade “Phenoma-gadgets.” The Theramatic Helmerator, or “top of AR7-Bot’s head,” contains a wireless Theremin that creates Sci-Fi sounds reminiscent of old Star Trek episodes. The Streamerator, manned by Professor Greg Arius, blasts rolls of toilet paper out into the crowd bringing them in as part of the show. Clouds of CO2 envelop the crowd while rockets launch from the Rocketerator. Inflatable models of Earth even hover above the band as they play the crowd favorite “Earth is the Best” using vortex technology swiped from The Smithsonian. These cleverly crafted devices add to the mystique and cult appeal of the band and are just some of the gems one can expect in the live spectacle.
With a band name that means, “to pilot an unusual experience,” it’s no wonder they travel in a mode of transportation true to that description. They have customized their own fleet of Phenoma-vechicles bringing their space age image to the streets. Littered with electronic gadgets from the late 20th Century such as remote controls, stereo components, and motherboards of defunct computers, they are easily mistaken for pieces of electrical equipment turned inside out, and never fail to turn heads on the highway. Catching a glimpse of one of these ships is truly an unforgettable experience.
When they are not touring the galaxy, their ships dock at the top-secret Command Center, located in the industrial heart of Earth’s Capitol, Western Oakland, CA. It is the center of The Phenomenauts’ universe and serves as home, rehearsal studio, and think tank for all things related to the band, as well as the location of their infamous parties. The Command Center was featured on the Discovery Channel, a three-page spread in Fat Mike’s (NOFX) magazine Punk Rock Confidential, and appears in the independent feature film “Punk Rock Holocaust.”
The Phenomenauts were honored with a VIP tour of NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston during their last tour, which included meetings with astronauts, scientists, and hands-on experience with space station parts and training facilities. Believed to be the first punk song ever to be broadcasts from space, the single “Infinite Frontier” was played aboard the International Space Station as the first wake-up call of the STS-124 mission in 2008.
To date, The Phenomenauts have toured the world with the likes of The Slackers, Aquabats, Demented Are Go, The Briefs, The Toasters, The Epoxies, the Vans Warped Tour and have trekked the states on numerous headlining tours with support from acts like The A.K.A.’s, Teenage Bottle Rocket and Kepi Ghoulie. For the band’s fifth national headlining tour this summer, code-named “Operation: Jumped Circuit,” our hero’s have recruited San Francisco punk-rockers The Re-Volts, featuring Spike from Me First And The Gimme Gimme’s and members of The Swingin Utters, to play main support across the USA and Canada systems.
Be prepared as The Phenomenauts help keep us focused and guide us through the turbulent waters of what the future might become. If we follow their lead, things might turn out alright.
Publish The Quest
Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday 1:15pm
It’s a long road, the road from Siem Reap to the capitol of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. The earth is red in all directions, as the overloaded bus bumps and jolts, left and right, down the worst path that I have ever been on. I am exhausted. Every time I try and lay my head back to close my eyes, the bus hits another pot hole, and my neck feels like it is going to snap. Mentally, this country is one of the heaviest that I have ever felt, but the people are so kind and all the kids selling postcards and bracelets blow kisses and wave as the bus fly’s past. I have been reading a collection of short stories written by survivors of pol pot’s genocide, survivors of the killing fields. Everywhere you look here there are limbless people, evidence, a testament to the millions of unexploded ordnance still buried just below the earth’s surface, still operational, left by the Khmer Rouge.
It is inconceivable to even try to imagine surviving, living, through something so horrific and then having the strength to speak about it… to write it down… to attempt to regain some sense of humanity in the world.
Publish The Quest were the words that I read in the final pages of that book. They were written in the narrator’s summary explaining why it is so important to hear these stories and to tell these stories. The answer… so that it never happens again. I held on to those words, Publish The Quest. For me they encompass the power of a story and the ability to make change happen through those stories.
That is what I hope comes across when people listen to our music. The power of stories and the desire to talk about things that are not easy to talk about… but are important. Really, the origin of the band was in the studio, recording songs for an album titled The Threads. I paid each member 50 dollars per song for their time. Expecting only to have a tangible example of my ideas and some of the stories that I was anxious to tell. From there, to my delight, everybody was willing and motivated to play shows, tour and work on more songs. There are seven members in Publish The Quest, all stemming from a wide variety of musical backgrounds. Some are students, some teachers… all extremely passionate and dedicated to music, all are amazing at what they do.
Now, in our second year as a group, we are in the final stages of our second album which will be titled Then What?! The four song CD that accompanies this letter is an example of some of our newest works. Produced by Mell Dettmer and myself, we are working on the final mixes and artwork of the album. Graced by Matt Chamberlain on drums, and Eyvind Kang’s string arrangements, this compilation of songs have taken on a life of their own. When people ask me what kind of music Publish The Quest is, I often find myself sputtering some combination of genres… To describe the music simply, I would say it is serious and groovy as shit! People that come to our shows like to dance. - Jacob Bain
Ravenna Woods
Redhook Stage ~ Saturday at 4:15pm
In 2007, Chris Cunningham got hired as a private contract teacher in the Marshall Islands. Bringing only an acoustic guitar and 4-track, he traveled to his assignment at a small boarding school in the outer island community of Jabor, Jaluit. It was here on this isolated atoll, nestled within the simplistic elements of acoustic guitar, ukulele and choral music, where the seeds of Ravenna Woods were planted.
Chris returned to Seattle in 2008 and met Brantley Duke, a local record engineer and musician. Within two months of their introduction, the pair began writing and playing music together. They shared a common interest in dark melodies combined with intricate vocal harmonies.
In the spring of 2009, a talented Seattle drummer by the name of Matt Badger was introduced to Chris at a show. Matt had heard demos of Chris and Brantley’s musical exploits, and was interested in establishing contact. After a 5 minute conversation, Matt was invited to join the project.
The trio spent the summer of ‘09 practicing and writing together, then began recording a full length album (Demons and Lakes) at the recording studio conveniently located at Cunningham’s house (Little Room Studio).
Since the album’s release, Ravenna Woods has been enjoying a large amount of local hype, consistent airplay on Seattle’s KEXP 90.3, and very favorable press from local and international sources.
The sound can best be described as innovative acoustic indie music that weaves together haunting vocal harmonies, complex finger picking, and unconventional percussion into complex song structures.
Instrumentation
Chris Cunningham – vocals, guitar, mandolin, percussion.
Brantley Duke – vocals, xylophone, percussion
Matt Bager – percussion, vocals
Discography
Full Length Album : Demons and Lakes
Airplay on KEXP 90.3
Satellite4
Waterfront Stage ~ Sunday at 1:30pm
Don’t call it funk. It’s not neo-anything. We’re not putting on an act, or trying to be something we’re not. All we do is respectfully, honestly play American soul music, and we do it damn well.
The Satellite 4 was literally born on the bricks of Beale Street, in the heart of Memphis. An organ player from Maryland met a guitar player from Idaho and a drummer from Nevada while they were all holding down a big international blues festival.
Later, in Seattle, we found our bass man – the cities own soul evangelist, Preachin’ the Blues on Sunday morning radio. A few ideas are thrown out, and it’s clear that everyone truly gets it. Bring everything to a rolling boil, and here we are… playing the greasy, gritty, temperamental offspring of a cold lonesome night fifty years ago somewhere in the swampland between Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi… when gospel, rock n’ roll, blues, and country all found each other and wouldn’t let go.
Sharing bills with some of the west coast’s best garage, surf, R’n'B, and lounge bands. The Satellite 4 works the necks of young, old, hip, and square alike.
SURREALIZED
Waterfront Stage ~ Sunday at 5:15pm
SURREALIZED is a scintillating musical project by a pair of Seattle musicians who seemingly come from two disparate disciplines. “ROB ANONYMOUS,î as in his hip-hop nom du plume, is a beat meister, producer, and performer who constructs melodies and rhythms/beats from a battery of electronics with a hip-hop oriented sensibility and has worked with such artists as MISS SOLAR SYSTEM, MENTATS, BEEHIVE, FADING COLLECTION and KEVIN SAWKA. KIMO MURAKI is a live and studio vocalist/multi-instrumentalist in the Seattle indie, folk, funk, and alt-country scene whose collaborations include work both nationally and internationally with such artists as ED HARCOURT, SOKO, FENCES, AQUEDUCT, HALLWAYS, MICHAEL VERMILLION and SHAWN SMITH to name a few. Lyrically, as you might expect with a name such as ìSURREALIZED,î the songs are written and delivered in an almost coded manner speaking to the soul as much as the mind ñ all for the purpose of a higher, ethereal sense of communication. SURREALIZED harkens back to the synth-pop/wave fueled 80s in one way, somewhat, but crunches along in a guitar driven romp in other ways, while simultaneously drawing on Dreamy Electrobeat driven, Psychedelic anthems.
Thaddillac
Waterfront Stage ~ Sunday at 4:00pm
Often compared to the diverse guitar stylings of Jimi Hendrix, Prince and Peter Frampton, Thaddillac’s trademark guitar playing is the pillar of the West Coast music scene. Combining the beauty of traditional soul with the power of rock, mixed with his talk-box stylings, he has gained a loyal national following.
As lead guitarist for the Seattle Heavy Soul band Maktub, Thaddillac has received glowing praise from Rolling stone Magazine, to NPR and the Seattle times. He has shared the stage with such notables as Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam, members of Digable Planets, as well as with Dave Matthews and India.Arie. His versatility as a guitar player has gained him national recognition for his unique sound and passionate playing.
Born in Seattle to a musical family, Thaddillac got his start at the age of 3 on the keyboards, but quickly parlayed that into a passion for the strings He grew up playing in church with his family, and also was an avid dancer performing for crowds at the tender age of 13. Thadd’s music genes run deep.
Thaddillac just finished touring Europe and Asia with African sensation Chiwoniso. He’s now back in the US promoting his debut album Fleetfoot Broham.
The Starlings
Redhook Stage ~ Sunday at 11:00am
Since forming in 2005, The Starlings have released three recordings, and are on the verge of releasing their fourth, “Bright Light,” in July.
After much touring and performing, they are hailed for their tried and true blend of voices and musicianship. The current incarnation of this sound includes songwriters Joy Mills and Tom Parker, drummer Aimee Zoe Tubbs, and bassist Moe Provencher. Their new album, “Bright Light” contains what has garnered fans near and far – the infectious melodies and layered harmonies, as well as new avenues of Americana and country-folk sounds that showcase their growth as a band.
“The Starlings vocal harmonies, acoustic goodness and sweet blend of folk and country set the stage for the band’s storied original songwriting and the compelling presence of vocalist Joy Mills.” -KEXP.org
To the Sea
Redhook Stage~ Saturday at 5:30pm
“Band of the Week”, The Stranger, Sept. ‘09
“Emotionally resonant indie rock is something Seattle does often and well. The same can be said of To The Sea. They’re brand-spanking new, having formed in 2008, but the band already has a full schedule of gigs all around Seattle’s most respected venues. They sound professional but soulful, ready to break into the big leagues any day now.” -seattleconcerts.com
“They opened like a hurricane, rocking the crowd with their sweet almost europop sounds. As I look to how the audience reacts it looks like everyone bobs in time to the music. It seems they’ve won over the crowd…” – From Makin Love to the Mic at The Mars Bar by Kate Sparrow – Seattlerepresent.com
Five-piece indie rock band To the Sea has a story to tell. Friends from childhood, To the Sea recently reunited in Seattle after founding members separated for years of travel and study, time well spent refining ideas and musicianship that now make them a band to watch for 2010.
To the Sea’s history and experience shows up in their songs as powerful, and sometimes plaintive, emotion and grit that never loses sight of certain and sweeping grandeur. Rooted in Brit Pop, To the Sea write songs that speak for themselves, lead from the gut, and make you think with equal parts salt and sweet.
Their EP, Short Chapters, is available now, with a tour planned for Spring/Summer 2010.
Winston Wolf
Redhook Stage ~ Sunday at 4:00pm
Winston Wolf out of Seattle Washington has been playing together in some form since Jr. High. Apparently they’re not sick of each other yet. Cranking out tunes that reference 60s and 70s rock and soul, Winston Wolff has made a name for themselves in seattle music scene.
