Art Cars
Seattle Art Cars is a loosely knit group of “cartists” best known for organizing the annual Seattle Art Car Blowout (SACBO). Forming in 1998 to participate in ‘Arts Edge’ at the Seattle Center, Seattle Art Cars gathered 28 artists together to display their Art Cars. The following year, they became part of the annual Fremont Fair, where up to 75 decorated cars are on view as part of the Seattle Art Car Blowout.
Anyone who has a distinctly modified vehicle, such as a “daily driver” decorated by embellishing a vehicle with paint, sculpture or glued assemblage (or combinations thereof) is encouraged to participate in Seattle Art Cars events throughout the year. Seattle Art Cars appear in various parades, school events, art festivals and neighborhood celebrations all over the Puget Sound area. However, the largest gathering in the Northwest is still the Seattle Art Car Blowout at the Fremont Fair, with Art Cars from across the US and Canada converging for one fabulous weekend.
Funds are raised throughout the year in order to host these out-of-towners, mostly for reimbursing their gas expenses (which can be considerable for a sculptural, heavy vehicle traveling across six states!). Artists are also housed, fed and entertained during their Seattle visit, and the Seattle Art Car Blowout has a wonderful reputation nationally.
Art Cars liven up the highways and are the ultimate form of public art, bringing it out of museums and galleries and onto the streets.
Seattle Art Cars is a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax deductable.
