Redhook History
Redhook was born out of the energy and spirit of the early 80’s in the heart of Seattle. While the term didn’t exist at the time, Redhook became one of America’s first “craft” breweries. From a modest start in a former transmission shop in Ballard, to a brewery in Fremont and later in Woodinville, Redhook has become one of America’s most recognized craft breweries. While Redhook has “grown up” over the past 30 years, one thing has never changed – Redhook’s still brewing great beers and making sure they’re having fun doing it.
Redhook’s Fremont Roots
Redhook bought the former home of the Seattle Electric Railway as its new location in downtown Fremont. Besides having great historical significance, it also kept Redhook near the community that supported it through those early years. The 26,000 square- foot building allowed the company to build a rather charming brewpub named the Trolleyman. Situated at the corner of Phinney Ave N and N 35th St., in current day this building is now home to Theo Chocolate.
A new brewhouse was built in 1988 using state-of-the-art brewing equipment from Anton Steinecker, a Bavarian manufacturer. The new equipment ensured product quality and consistency and made Redhook the most technically advanced craft brewery in North America. Interest and demand for craft beers continued to grow. To keep pace, Redhook built a second brewery in Woodinville, Washington in 1999. It was a sad day when we had to move from Fremont and its residents.
Redhook and the Fremont Fair
2011 will mark the 24th year of what has turned out to be a fantastic partnership between Redhook Brewery and the Fremont Fair! Since the Brewery originated right in the heart of downtown Fremont, the Fremont Fair has always been an important event for Redhook and a special opportunity to be involved with the surrounding community.
